Where Does Ambition Come From?
Find out the source of your ambition and supercharge it with desire and courage
I personally believe that ambition is something that we’re born with. Particularly when we’re young, survival instinct tells us to strive to grow up fast… we dream big. Nearly everybody has ambition when they are young, but it seems like our experiences and nurturing have a huge impact on what we do with that ambition. We either embrace it, feed it and let it flourish, or sometimes it just lays there without purpose. Sometimes fate dictates our motivation and ambition in life.
Growing up poor or in tough circumstances is often a motivator to do whatever it takes to overcome and better your situation. Adversity is a great motivator and there are countless stories from people who have achieved great things in life, that talk about their need to overcome adversity as a primary driver in their life.
I look at the Greatest Generation, the World War II generation as a case in point. Their collective experience of suffering and overcoming great adversity, led to a blossoming of human achievements that we still benefit from today.
Remember, there are different kinds of ambition. For instance, there is Blind Ambition. This generally has somewhat of a dark meaning. Someone who has blind ambition is thought of as a person willing to do anything to succeed including ignoring morality, conscience and respect for the law and other humans.
On the other hand, there is the ambition that involves a desire to do good or to be successful at something that is positive and respectable.
Here are some illuminating quotes about the different types of Ambition.
“I would rather be a little nobody, then to be an evil somebody.”
Here’s something to think about…
“If a person holds no ambitions in this world, he suffers unknowingly. If a person holds ambitions, he suffers knowingly, but very slowly.”
― Alan Lightman, Einstein’s Dreams
Plenty of people, in fact nearly everyone, have the seed. They want. Yet if you talk to the average person, you’ll find that the seed is just sitting there, shriveling up in the palm of their hand. Maybe they don’t know how or where to plant it. Or maybe they’re just scared of the change that would happen if they gave it a little nurturing to grow.
